LCL vs FCL: How to Choose for Small Orders from China

If your shipment won't fill a container, you ship LCL (Less than Container Load) — your cargo shares a container with other importers. If it will, you book FCL (Full Container Load) and the box is yours. Simple, until you're the person standing between the two options wondering which one is actually cheaper.

The quick decision guide

• •Under ~2 CBM and light: check air freight first — it may beat LCL on total cost

Why the crossover zone trips people up

LCL looks cheaper per CBM — say $45–80/CBM to the US West Coast versus $1,500+ for a 20ft container that holds 28 CBM. Do the naive math and LCL wins up to about 20 CBM. But naive math is exactly how importers lose money here.

Two things change the equation. First, a full container you load yourself wastes nothing — LCL charges by the higher of volume or weight ratio. Second, and this is the big one:

The destination fee trap in LCL

That $45/CBM ocean rate typically excludes what happens at the destination CFS (Container Freight Station): deconsolidation, documentation, warehouse handling — commonly another $30–60 per CBM, sometimes more. Book a 13 CBM LCL shipment at $45/CBM and you can end up paying more than a 20ft container would have cost, delivered.

Our rule: any LCL quote we issue lists destination CFS charges in writing before you book. If a forwarder won't put them in writing, that silence is the price.
