How to Choose a Reliable China Sourcing Agent: 10 Red Flags
·7 min read·Linfon Sourcing Team
Every buyer forum has the same two posts: "My sourcing agent saved my business" and "My sourcing agent took $50,000 and disappeared." Both are real. The difference between them usually shows up before any money moves — if you know what to look for.
These ten red flags come from buyer reports across Reddit, Trustpilot and trade forums. One alone might be nothing. Three or more? Walk away.
The 10 red flags
- •1. No verifiable address or company registration — and no willingness to video-call the office
- •2. Refuses video calls or live warehouse tours ("our policy") while asking for a deposit
- •3. Can't or won't explain their fee structure — commission, markups, supplier rebates — in writing
- •4. Demands 50–100% upfront before any service is rendered
- •5. Only ever recommends ONE factory for every product (kickback territory)
- •6. No inspection process, no sample reports, no QC photos beyond staged marketing shots
- •7. Personal email accounts only (gmail/qq) — no company domain, no contracts
- •8. Quotes dramatically below every other quote you've collected
- •9. Cannot provide a single reference client you can actually contact
- •10. Pressure tactics: "price rises tomorrow," "another client wants this slot"
Now the positive checklist — what good looks like
- •A physical office you can video-verify, ideally near a manufacturing cluster
- •Transparent pricing: a published commission percentage and an itemized fee list
- •Multiple factory quotes presented side by side, with pros and cons
- •Real inspection reports with photos, defect counts and a Pass/Fail verdict
- •Milestone payments — typically 30% deposit, 70% after you approve inspection
- •A named agent who answers on WhatsApp within hours, not days
- •Written agreements, company invoices, and a business license they'll share
The three questions that do the most filtering
- •"What's your commission, and do you receive anything from the factories?" — evasiveness here is disqualifying
- •"Show me a real inspection report." — ability to produce one instantly is the difference between QC theater and QC
- •"Can we do a video call at your warehouse this week?" — honest agents love this request; fake ones dread it
A note on price
Cheap is not the same as good value. An agent charging 5% transparently is usually cheaper than a 'free' agent earning a hidden 15% markup on your goods, or a cheap one whose QC fails cost you a container of returns. Compare total landed cost and total risk — not headline percentages.
